CGMs are considered Bluetooth LE (Low Energy) devices. Google only allows scanning & pairing of Bluetooth LE devices if the “access location permission” was given. Their reasoning is that scanning & pairing Bluetooth devices may show Bluetooth low energy location beacons and thus reveal the user’s location to the scanning app. (They have documented this for Android developers here if you want to read more.)
By requiring this permission, Android users are given visibility into this potential exposure. It is highly unlikely that we will receive any location information, but since the possibility exists we ask to have that permission to enable the pairing process.
